Picking A College That’s Right For You

With all of the colleges out there, choosing the right one can seem overwhelming.  These are just some of the many questions should answer before making your decision.  The best decision is an informed decision, so do your homework now before you start applying.

1) What do I like to do?  It’s important to get a degree in something you are passionate about.  But it’s equally important to graduate with a degree you can use out in the real world. The trick is finding something you like that also has good opportunities for jobs once you graduate.

2) What schools offer this major?  Not all schools offer the degree or major you are looking for.  Before you apply, make sure the school has majors/degrees in your area(s) of interest.

3) What can I afford? Start thinking about what you can afford for school and what’s the best way for you to complete your education. There are many different options. You may start off at a four year institution and stay there the whole time. Or you may get an associate’s degree at a technical college or two-year college and then transfer to a four-year institution. This could potentially save you a lot of money.

4) Location, location, location. Be honest with yourself about how far away you’re willing to live from home. See what housing options the college offers. If you need on-campus housing, check to see that the college offers it (and if they offer enough spaces for incoming students. Sometimes there may be a wait list). Take into account how your housing decision affects you financially.

Examples of living costs

Home Campus* Apartment*
Mileage, parking, time Room/board, meals Room/board, meals, utilities, parking, internet

*If you don’t live at home and you live far away, you’ll also want to factor in the cost to come home on holidays and breaks (flight, bus, etc.)

5) Student organizations. If you like being involved in your school or community, then you’ll definitely want to find out what kinds of opportunities you’d have as a student. These organizations can help you build relationships, gain experience, and make for a better college experience.

6) Student safety. Check out crime statistics for the campus and surrounding area to see how safe an environment the school can provide you.
