Title: Spotlight on Food Justice Tool: the Food System Equity and Empowerment Lens
Presenters: Lexa Dundore, Dane County UW-Extension Americorps VISTA Community Food Systems Educator
When: Tuesday July 28 – 1:00 to 2:00 pm
Where: Blackboard Collaborate: https://sas.elluminate.com/m.jnlp?sid=1304&password=M.C7B765093E43CC0582412FEE15408C
Description: Lexa will share an updated Food Systems Equity and Empowerment Lens she adapted for the 2014 Dane County Food Summit, a tool that can help decision-makers consider questions such as “How are people uniquely situated in terms of the barriers they experience?” and “What policies, processes, or relationships contribute to the exclusion of individuals and communities most affected by inequities?” Lexa will introduce a discussion around the applications, benefits, and limitations of incorporating this kind of tool into our work at Extension.
The Food Systems Equity and Empowerment Lens is a tool that you can use in your own planning processes, as well as a resource to engage both colleagues and community members in planning and decision-making processes. It includes a facilitation guide, developed by Lexa, that will help you lead discussions around food systems. The tool’s facilitation guide will highlight food justice and food equity issues that are often overlooked and helps identify unseen benefits and burdens of food systems.
This Spotlight Series Discussion will help you learn how to use this tool so that you will be able to facilitate discussions in your own community and in decision-making processes when developing programming or policies. This is a tool for “doing with” instead of “doing for” and can help you in your professional environment make planning and decision-making processes more engaging and respectful.
