The U.S. Census Bureau terminated the collection of data for the Statistical Compendia program effective October 1, 2011. Historical data is still available.
Often overlooked in the scramble to find data, the Statistical Abstract of the United States was one of the best places to start looking for information. From 1878-2012, the Statistical Abstract was the place to go for social, political, and economic statistics on the United States.
In addition to serving as a source of data, the Statistical Abstract included a comprehensive guide to other data sources (Appendix 1).
Although the emphasis in the Statistical Abstract is primarily on national data, many tables present data for regions and individual states and a smaller number for metropolitan areas and cities.
