Farm uses can coexist with solar arrays

One of the objectives of my column is to improve readers’ agricultural literacy. I recently found I need to keep working on this after reading an article about a proposed solar farm near Cearfoss.

Can somebody please tell me what a solar farm is? I know what it isn’t, and that is a farm. A farm by definition is a plot of land devoted to the raising of crops and animals, especially domestic livestock.

This current project is actually taking land out of agricultural production for energy production. The plants replaced or shaded out by these panels are the true solar field where sunlight is transformed to food or feed. These plants not only transform sunlight into proteins and carbohydrates but also sequester carbon.
