Managing Pain in Youngstock

Removing horns from dairy cattle is an important farm safety practice because it prevents injuries to people and cattle.  Removal of the horn or horn bud is a painful procedure and can be managed with by disbudding/dehorning cattle at a young age with proper pain management.

As part of Wisconsin Public Television’s University Place program Managing Pain in Youngstock, UW-Extension Taylor County Agriculture Agent Sandy Stuttgen and Oconto County Agriculture Agent Sarah Mills-Lloyd discuss the use of antibiotics on farm; the use of pain mitigation and sedation in the dehorning process; and the alternative methods to tail docking.
