Horse & Pony

Welcome to all new and returning Dane County 4-H Horse & Pony project members. Please carefully review the Horse & Pony educational requirements for the 2020/2021 project year. Be sure to read thoroughly as there are changes this year. 


4-H requirements for Horse and Pony and Horseless Horse members to show at the Dane County Fair:

  1. All members Grade 3 or higher are required to attend a Dane County 4-H Horse and Pony Education Safety Orientation clinic once prior to showing at the Dane County Fair. Members who have successfully completed a safety orientation in prior years do not need to repeat the training.
    • Due to COVID-19 and limitations on facility use, youth who need to complete the Safety Orientation will do so online. To complete the Safety Clinic Training, youth should review the six reference resources listed in Horse and Pony Safety Clinic – 2021 Online Alternative link below. After reviewing the information, youth should complete the Safety Clinic Quiz (link in Safety Clinic resource document). To get credit for the Safety Clinic, youth must attain a score of at least 9 out of 10 on the quiz. If youth receive less than 9, please review the material and retake the quiz. Responses are saved and passing grades will be recorded.


  1. All 4-H Members are required to complete at least one of the education requirements listed below and complete the Horse and Pony Education Card, including what was learned and how the information will be used:

*Due to COVID-19 and limitations on facility use, the Dane County 4-H Horse and Pony  Education Committee will not be providing in-person clinics this year.

    1. Attend an Horse & Pony Open Show or Breed Show between January 1, 2021 and June 15, 2021. As proof of attendance, have the Show Secretary sign the Education Card or scan and upload the show bill with the Show Secretary’s signature and upload with the Education Card. Complete all sections of the education card including what was learned and how the information will be used.
    2. Watch at least one approved videos listed below, then complete all sections of the education card including what was learned and how the information will be used.
    3. Other hands on events/clinics will need to be approved.

 Private lessons, farrier appointments, vet appointments do not count toward the educational requirement.

Education Card Submission Information

Dane County Horse and Pony Education Requirement Card 2021 FILLABLE – Complete all sections of the Education Card and save as LastName.FirstName.Species (Ex.Clover.Chris.Horse) before uploading to the online portal.

How and when to submit education requirements:

  • To qualify to show at the Dane County Fair with 4-H, FFA or other Dane County youth organization, youth exhibitors must meet species education requirements and submit proof by June 15, 2021 at 11:59pm by using the  EDUCATION REQUIREMENT UPLOAD PORTAL ** 
    • **Access to a Google Account is required to upload documents in the portal. This helps keep documents secure. Youth can utilize their school account or utilize a family account. If the youth does not have access to a Google Account, please email for an alternative option.
  • If showing in more than one species, youth must complete and submit the requirements for each species.
  • If a youth documented more than one species on an education card, they will be asked to upload the same card for each species represented. To upload the education card, please save the document as a JPG, TIFF, or PDF. Youth can take a picture of the education card to upload.
  • Contact the species Education Committee Chairperson listed to receive approval for educational opportunities not listed.
