Volunteering with Local Food

 

There are many food related volunteer opportunities in the Douglas County area.  Master Gardeners and Community Garden Programs are some of the options.  If you have a volunteer opportunity you need filled that is related to local food, please call Jeanne Ward, UW-Extension, Douglas County at 715-395-1364 or email jeanne.ward@ces.uwex.edu.  We will then list your opportunity.  If you would like to volunteer, call the organizations listed below for more information.  UW-Extension does not endorse or guarantee the quality or experience of the opportunity.   This is an informational resource only.

Lake Superior Master Gardeners

LSMGA supports its membership in the practical joys and benefits of volunteering for their community.  Volunteers pay a membership fee and receive initial and ongoing training and volunteer opportunities.  Contact the UW-Extension office in Douglas County for the fall training dates at 715-395-1363.

Food Shelf Volunteers

Northwest Community Services Agency (NWCSA) accepts local garden produce and any packaged donations that are within the date of expiration (not expired.)  It is a Temporary Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) pantry including mostly canned/boxed/dry items and donated bread from local bakeries (mostly white.) Fresh produce is a huge treat!  It goes asap. NWCSA Food Pantry is open M-TH 1-3:30pm and is closed daily over the noon hour.  Call (715) 392-5127.

Faith United Methodist Church (FUMC) Food Pantry sponsors the largest food pantry in Douglas County and is more than a temporary emergency food assistance program TEFAP –pantry volunteers procure fresh produce from 2nd Harvest Food Shelf. FUMC food Pantry is open every Tuesday 3:30-6:30pm.  FUMC Pantry prefers fresh produce drop off on Mondays and Tuesdays if possible since they are a weekly (Tues. only) pantry.  However, they also serve free community meals on some weekends.  Call (715) 394-9608

In addition, both Harbor House sites accept produce and donated food anytime.  Harbor House #1 @ 5822  Ogden Ave. & HH #2 @: 19 N. 21st St. are run by FUMC (Rev’s Barb & Joel Certa-Werner, pastors.).  They also accept volunteers for garden planing and maintenance.  Contact Kathy at (715)392-4157 or (715)392-3636.
