The U.S. Census American Community Survey (ACS) provides an indicator of how well states retain college graduates. According to the 2009 ACS, 41.8 percent of the college graduates age 25 years and older live in the state where they were born. Similar data for Minnesota and Illinois reveals that 53 percent of the college graduates living in each state in 2009 were born in that state.
