Holiday Shopping Creates Jobs

For many retailers, a good winter holiday season is the difference between a profitable and losing year.
Many job seekers also rely on the holidays for seasonal employment.

In 2010, Wisconsin retailers added a net 15,536 between September and December.

Unfortunately, those gains disappeared by February 2011.
Preliminary estimates from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) show that between December 2010 and February 2011, retail employment in Wisconsin declined by -23,673.

The BLS Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages (QCEW) reveals that since 2000, Wisconsin retailers have added an average of 16,780 employees between September and December, but cut an average of -24,136 jobs between December and February each year.
