Upham Woods Outdoor Learning Center is a residential field station of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. They have year-round environmental education programs that focus on conservation, adventure and team-building activities, and socio-emotional and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) skills. Learn about the different summer camp programs and other year-round residential programs they offer. Upham Woods follows University of Wisconsin-Madison risk management policies and complies with the State of Wisconsin Recreational Education Code (ATCP 78 legislation), as an overnight recreational and educational camp.

Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) Chapter ATCP 78 describes several requirements that overnight organized user groups, (groups of adults and usually children) must follow for the safety of their campers and camp staff. Camps are responsible for making sure these groups staying overnight complies with the requirements and ensure health and safety, and property documentation during their visit. Organized user groups must complete planning and preparations before visiting their camp (i.e. Upham Woods). Chapter ATCP 78 lists describes the requirements for compliance, including health services staffing, logging health records, first aid and CPR certification, food safety, and securing and administering medication. A summary of these requirements can be found here.

The American Camp Association (ACA) website can be used as a tool to find camps near you or where you want to visit. Camps that are ACA accredited have been educated on the key aspects of camp operation, particularly those related to program quality and the health and safety of campers and staff. The standards establish guidelines for needed policies, procedures, and practices. Learn more about ACA accreditation here.
