UW-Extension Dairy Calf & Heifer Management

The Dairy Science Department‘s Extension Specialists in Management, Reproduction, Genetics, and Physiology are the outreach arm of the University of Wisconsin – Madison. These specialists conduct applied research and conduct extension and outreach programs in dairy science. The Dairy Science program is part of the UW-Madison College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.

UW-Extension Dairy Team‘s Dairy Calf & Heifer Management Workgroup is composed of state extension specialists and local county extension agents working collaboratively to conduct research and develop resources regarding dairy calf and heifer management.  The workgroup aims to make Wisconsin’s calf and heifer industry strong and competitive through university-based research.

Dr. Matt Akins joined UW-Madison Department of Dairy Science in 2015 as the Extension Dairy Specialist focusing on forages and dairy replacement management.  Matt’s responsibilities as dairy heifer management specialist will include applied research and extension programming, with a specific focus on the management and nutrition of dairy replacement heifers. He will also collaborate closely with scientists at the USDA-ARS Institute for Environmentally Integrated Dairy Management at the UW-Marshfield Agriculture Research Station, as they work on problems related to the interaction between agronomic practices, herd management protocols, animal facilities, and the environmental impact of dairy operations.

Matt completed his Ph.D. studies at UW-Madison in 2012, under the supervision of Dr. Randy Shaver.  His research focus included Vitamin B12, corn silage, corn snaplage, and monensin use in dairy cattle.  Prior to joining the staff at UW-Marshfield Agriculture Research Station, Matt was an Assistant Professor of Animal Science at UW-Platteville.

Tina Kohlman has been with UW-Extension since 1999, most recently serving as UW-Extension Fond du Lac County’s Dairy & Livestock Agent since May 2012 supporting the Fond du Lac County dairy industry.  Her proactive outreach includes programming efforts utilizing university-based research to help producers adopt or improve management practices on the farm; conducting on-farm field surveys and research related to milk quality and production costs; and development of publications and curriculum which help improve productivity and profitability for farm clientele.

Tina has been a leader in state-wide educational efforts regarding dairy replacements and dairy workers’ training.  She has developed the nationally award-winning UW-Extension Dairy Workers’ Training-Calf Management Skills and numerous factsheets and publications regarding calf and heifer management.  She has presented throughout the Midwest for local, regional and international groups on cost of raising dairy replacements.

Tina is a graduate from Western Kentucky University (B.S. Biochemistry with an agriculture emphasis) and the University of Georgia (M.S. Dairy Science with a nutrition emphasis).

Dr. Sarah Mills-Lloyd joined UW-Extension Oconto County in 2013 as the Agriculture Agent specializing in dairy and livestock. With her veterinarian background and certification in Milk & Dairy Beef Quality Assurance program, Sarah provides educational programs related to animal health and animal husbandry not only in Oconto County, but across Wisconsin.  Sarah incorporates new innovative technologies with university-based research to provide educational and outreach efforts for producers focusing on animal well-being, calf management and transition cow management.

Sarah is a sought out resource in the state for animal health and well-being.  She has developed numerous videos and factsheets regarding calf processing management to ensure animal well-being.  Sarah most recently has developed a Calf Sanitation Audit program for producers to determine the effectiveness of their sanitation program and now to improve best management practices to promote animal well-being.

Sarah is a graduate of Moorhead State University (1998 & 2000), and the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine (2005).  Prior to joining UW-Extension  Sarah was in private practice as an associate veterinarian for eight years in Northeast Wisconsin, working primarily in dairy practice.

Sarah currently serves as the co-leader for the UW-Extension Dairy Team’s Animal Husbandry Workgroup and was the past-chairperson for UW-Extension’s Wisconsin Dairy & Beef Well-Being Conference.

Mark Hagedorn served as Brown County’s Agriculture Educator from 2006 to 2013 and is currently serving in the same capacity at UW-Extension Eau Claire County. During this time he has developed programs focusing in areas of: dairy modernization and management, dairy crop management, and strategies for improved rural/urban agricultural awareness.  His work has been appreciated and effective in improving milk quality through the myriad of management tools that affect a dairy operation, employee safety and training, and improvement of rural/urban relations. His outreach to underserved audiences including Hispanic and Hmong clientele has been commendable. He is diligent in looking for ways to serve farms of all sizes.

Mark has been proactive in addressing the cost of raising dairy replacements, leading programming efforts in both the 2013 and 2015 Intuitive Cost of Production Analysis for Dairy Replacements. He has developed numerous factsheets and publications regarding heifer economics.  Mark currently serves as the co-leader for the UW-Extension Dairy Team.

Prior to joining UW-Extension, Mark has served in the dairy industry for nearly 30 years in the areas of nutrition and herd management.  Mark received his M.S. degree from Iowa State University (animal science focus) and his B.S. degree in Dairy Science from Northwest Missouri State University.
