Safety with Others
Parents, the next step is teaching your child or children some general safety guidelines. This video contains information on protecting children from sexual abuse and child abduction. Please review this video independently and determine if you want to share it with your child as a starting point for talking about these topics.
Please watch the video on “Safety with Others”.

Now take the time to practice the following “What Would You Do If….?” scenarios with your child.
What would you do if . . .
- A salesperson calls and wants to check a delivery date?
- A school counselor calls and want to verify school records?
- An old friend of the family stops by or calls?
Practicing these scenarios and skills is essential. When it comes to safety issues, research shows that children learn little from discussions alone, unless practice is included. When children practice these skills, they are much more likely to remember them and really use them when needed.
The next lessons in Home Alone: Preparing for Self-Care help children identify types of emergencies and understand what is a true emergency. Parents can help children learn about emergencies and good responses to them. Children are more likely to handle a situation well if they understand the reason for the response.
