Outstanding Young Farmer

WI Outstanding Young Farmer Program
Now through Nov. 10, the Wisconsin Outstanding Young Farmer (OYF) program is accepting nominations for the state Awards Weekend to be held in January.   Nominees should be aged 21 through 39 years old and derive two-thirds or more of their income from farming.   Any agricultural enterprise is eligible and the applicant can either be the farm owner or an operator involved in the business.  The award is based on 50 percent progress in ag career, 25 percent soil and water conservation and 25 percent contributions to community, state and nation.

“Our focus is to expand the number of candidates and the variety of commodities represented,” says Cindy Matton, OYF Awards Weekend event organizer.  “The OYF program reflects all types of agriculture here in Wisconsin, and we have a diverse array of commodities and producers,” she notes.   Local farmer nominees are sponsored to the state event by agribusinesses and agricultural groups.

Goals of the OYF program are:

  • To foster better urban-rural relations through the understanding of farmers’ challenges, as well as the appreciation of their contributions and achievements;
  • To bring about a greater interest in farmers/ranchers;
  • To help build an urban awareness of the farmers’ importance and impact on America’s economy.

Now in its 61st year, Wisconsin OYF has had 17 national winners.    On the national level, OYF is sponsored by John Deere and supported by the Outstanding Farmers of America Fraternity and the National Association of County Agricultural Agents.
