The 3rd annual Farming for Profit series sponsored by six northern Wisconsin county UW-Extension offices will focus on fresh market vegetable production in northern Wisconsin. This intensive short course is being offered in conjunction with the University of Wisconsin-Extension Fresh Market Vegetable Team and UW-Madison’s Center for Integrated Agriculture Systems (CIAS).
This short-course series is designed to mentor current and aspiring fresh market vegetable producers; those who are considering starting a fresh market vegetable farm to those who are seeking more information for a vegetable operation.
Program topics include:
— the economics, labor and income potential;
— understanding your customers and marketing options;
— crop production strategies, soil management and equipment;
— integrated pest management; and
— season extension strategies.
Instructors include UW-Madison/Extension specialists Amanda Gevens and Russell Groves, John Hendrickson from UW-Madison’s CIAS, UW-Extension agriculture agents and several experienced fresh market vegetable growers.
The program will be held on six consecutive Monday evenings from 6:30 p.m. – 9 p.m. between Jan. 28 thru Mar 4. Six locations are simultaneously offering the program: Ashland, Hayward, Ladysmith, Luck, Spooner, and Superior. A follow-up vegetable field day on a working market farm will be held at a later date to be determined in the spring.
Enrollment per site is limited in order to allow interaction with instructors in the course. Registrations are available on a first-come, first-serve basis, so register early. The registration fee is $75 per person or $100 per farm for two people sharing materials. Registration fees provide for coursework proceedings from seven sessions organized for your future reference, lab analysis and interpretation of one soil sample, a personalized crop enterprise budget for your farm, and operational costs for the shortcourse. Registration for this year’s short course is due on Jan. 18, 2013.
