Youth solve a real-world challenge at the statewide 4-H Ag Innovators Experience Kick-Off

Buffalo County 4-H’ers led a National Ag Day celebration that went beyond promoting agriculture to solving a real-world agriculture challenge. 4-H teen leaders Rachel Hovey of Lookout Legends 4-H and Abby George of Hilltop Climbers 4-H engaged 50 youth in an interactive “Water Windmill Challenge” as part of the 4-H Ag Innovators Experience. The educational event took place on Tuesday, March 24, 2015 at the Cochrane – Fountain City School in conjunction with Buffalo County 4-H and 4-H Afterschool programs.

Dairy Quiz Bowl

4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl and Management results

Shawano County’s senior dairy bowl team and their senior dairy management team topped the State 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl and Management Contests on February 7 in Portage. The quiz bowl team will represent Wisconsin in November at the national contest in Louisville, KY and the Management Contest team will represent Wisconsin at the All American Dairy Show Youth Management contest in Harrisburg, PA. In quiz bowl Juneau County earned top honors as the winning mixed division team, while Sheboygan finished first in the junior division. For the management contest Barron County won first prize for the mixed division and Sheboygan County took home top honors for the junior division.

2015 Wisconsin 4-H Quiz Bowl and Skillathon Results

The Wisconsin 4-H Quiz Bowl and Skillathon contests were both held on Saturday, March 7 at the University of Wisconsin Madison Animal Sciences Building. Livestock Quiz Bowl is a competition where questions are about beef, sheep, swine and meat goat topics and students use a buzzer in order to answer. Teams compete in a double elimination format by giving oral answers to questions posed by a judge. Each match has both an individual and toss-up question round. A group discussion round is included in the senior division to simulate the national competition.

Wisconsin 4-H Awarded $10,000 Science Sponsorship for Local Tech Takeover

Upham Woods Outdoor Learning Center, Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin and Wisconsin 4-H was selected to receive a $10,000 science sponsorship from National 4-H Council and HughesNet® to implement a “Tech Takeover Day” during Operation: Military Kids (OMK) camp at Upham Woods this summer. During the Tech Takeover Day on August 22, 2014 OMK campers will participate in programming to expand their access to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in the outdoors.

4-H celebrates Centennial at Wisconsin State Fair

Wisconsin 4-H Youth Development staff, volunteers, friends and supporters enjoyed a wonderful day at the Wisconsin State Fair on Tuesday, August 5. Thousands of Wisconsin State Fair guests visited the Central Park to experience hands-on 4-H and UW-Extension activities and celebrate 100 years of growing Wisconsin leaders!


Livestock results from Area Animal Science Days

The 2014 Area Animal Science Days were held in Manitowoc, Columbia, Eau Claire and Crawford Counties. Youth judged breeding and market classes of each of the following species: swine, beef, sheep and in some locations meat goats. Congratulations to all participants in this year’s regional contests.
