Expanding Your Effort

When we are successful, we often want to expand our access to reach new audiences or scale up our effort to have a larger impact footprint.

Access and Inclusion

Improving access and participation involves ensuring your program reaches and activity includes all people it strives to serve.  There are many best practices and resources for how to expand access to and participation in your program.

  • Inclusion Excellence is the active and intentional engagement, appreciation and welcoming of diversity and differences in ideas, in people, in our educational programming and in the communities we serve. Diversity and inclusion are essential to our sustainability and central to our mission, our values and our strategic directions. As such, diversity and inclusion are central aspects of our program development models and processes. Inclusive Excellence is built on a foundation of compliance with civil rights, affirmative action and equal opportunity laws and policies and special outreach to audiences that historically have been neglected.
    • Inclusive Excellence Research Project

2016-07-19_8-56-51In 2015, leaders at the University of Wisconsin – Cooperative Extension expressed interest in understanding the extent to which inclusive excellence is modeled in educational programming. The Program Development & Evaluation unit was charged with the task of conducting a study on inclusive excellence as it relates to programming and sharing learning around what seems to be working well, as well as challenges that prevent colleagues from working in inclusive ways. The IE Research Project page contains study findings and a tool for colleagues to use as they plan for and implement culturally responsive programming to diverse audiences. Inclusive Excellence Research Project Page

  • The Sustainable Equitable Engagement Process (SEEP) is an initiative of University of Wisconsin-Cooperative Extension that supports colleagues in intentionally meeting the needs of diverse and underserved communities. SEEP is comprised of three components: mapping workshops, case studies and learning communities. Together, these efforts aim to create systematic change to promote institution-wide involvement in community engagement that reflects the perspectives and priorities of diverse and underserved audiences.

  • Strong communication is essential to build strong relationships with our Wisconsin communities. In some cases, however, language differences between our organization’s staff and members of our state’s communities present challenges to the communication process. In many cases, these challenges can be avoided with the appropriate types of support. We do not want to limit our organization’s capacity to build strong relationships across the state. We value opportunities to build relationships around the state and do not want to limit our organization’s capacity to fulfill its mission. Our organization is committed to inclusive practices in programs and activities that help build stronger relationships with linguistically and culturally diverse audiences. In order to realize this commitment, we need to ensure that persons who may be limited in their ability to communicate effectively in English, and staff who may be limited in their ability to speak languages other than English have the appropriate support to communicate with one another as needed. Scale Your Effort

We may have started small, but now want to scale our efforts in terms of who we reach.

  • VMCL Guide and Committed Minority are two frameworks for conceptualizing change at organizational, network or community scales.
  • Collective Impact is an emerging framework that is popular with coalitions and other networked groups.
