Would You Like to Have a Pot-a-thon?  Do you have lots of plants in your yard?
Consider donating for next year.

We’re always looking for new gardens for our “pot-a-thons”.  A crew of experienced master gardeners, guided by a member of the plant sale committee, would come to your garden and help you dig and divide your selected plants.  If you wonder if you have enough plants to merit a pot-a-thon, call or email Patty Witt, or if you have other questions, don’t hesitate to call or email any member of the Plant Sale Committee listed below.  We’d love to make a field trip to your garden.

Plant Sale Week —   Approximate Tasks and Schedule

Pre-Sale Week at State Fair park
Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, beginning at 9 AM each day, we will be transporting plants to State Fair Park (behind the DNR building) and arranging them for the sale.  If you have some time (and ENERGY!) please come to help with the pre-sale prep activities.  No need to check-in or call ahead.  Just stop in and see how the area is transformed into a sales display.  This week, we’ll need you RAIN OR SHINE.  Bring appropriate rain gear and boots depending on the weather.

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, May 11, 12, 13, 14, 2020 9:00 am – 4:00 pm
We will work Monday thru Thursday from 9 to about 4.  Friday hours are dependent upon our needs.  Please come when you can and leave when you must.  You must have your MGV pin or tag and should enter from the 84th Street entrance.  Turn right on Wetley Way inside the grounds and go south to DNR area parking.   Parking will be free at least through Thursday and probably Friday.  Lunch will be provided for you each day.  Monday is clean up and set up day, along with plant deliveries.  We will be pruning, checking labels and arranging by botanical name.  There are a variety of jobs to be done each day.  Dress for hard work and wear comfortable work shoes.

Pre-sale is Friday, May 15, 2020  from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm
The pre-sale is a privilege open to MGVs who have paid their dues.   We ask that you not bring friends or family other than spouses or partners.  A list of available plants will be posted soon.    We are pleased to have a very nice selection of perennials.  We also have a wonderful selection of beautiful shrubs and trees this year.   Check our Facebook page to see some of them. A silent auction will also be held at the pre-sale.

Sale Day — Saturday, May 16, 2020, 8 am to 1:00 pm.
There will be a parking charge on Saturday unless you beat the parking staff to State Fair.  The gates open at 6:00 am.  Generally, customers begin lining up for the sale around 6:30 am.  If you plan to work the sale, you will need to be in the DNR area no later than 7 am. for the volunteer meetings.  We need over 100 volunteers for the day.  T-shirt distribution is first come, first served.  Seasoned volunteers will have one color, “newbies” will have a different color.  Snacks and drinks will be available while supplies last.  Jobs to be filled include personal shoppers, specific plant advisors (hostas, natives, daylilies, shrubs, shade plants, sun plants, butterfly plants, etc.), plant sitters, sled distribution and collection, plant placement and moving, cashiers, talliers, special needs aides, “gophers”, crowd control, and more.   “New” volunteers will be paired with and mentored by seasoned MGVs.

Monday, May 20, 2020, is a post-sale/cleanup day.
Plants are still for sale (no discounts), and garden chairs can get plants for their approved gardens.  If any plants remain they are donated.  The grounds need to be cleaned up and all supplies need to be moved back to storage.  Volunteers are needed for a couple of hours that morning.

Let’s hope for a full week of sunny, dry, warm weather.  The plants need it and so do we!!!
