Does Your Trailer Fit Your Cattle?

There is no denying that finished cattle weights and sizes have increased over time.

There has also been shown an increase in bruises on fed cattle carcasses that result in losses from trim at the packer in some high value parts of the carcasses.

A recent investigation conducted by Kansas State has shown that some of the bruising is due to cattle trailer compartment doors (in particular the door going into the belly compartment on pot load trailers) not being large enough to allow fed cattle of current sizes to enter and exit that compartment without bruising themselves.

The following link will take you to a recent article in Drovers Magazine that goes into greater detail on the problem and what corrections are being made.

Bruises result in $35 million in losses
