James “Jim” Barthel

Green and Winnebago County 4-H & Youth Educator

Jim spent his life and career educating and giving back to others. His career began as a Peace Corps Volunteer in El Salvador. This was followed by a 29-year UW-Extension career as a 4-H Youth Development Educator, first in Green County and then in Winnebago County. He retired Professor Emeritus in 2000 and was inducted into the National 4-H Hall of Fame in 2012.

Jim motivates, guides, and facilitates youth and adults to tackle tough issues and celebrate success. Career highlights include strengthening 4-H clubs, conducting and applying research to local youth and parenting issues, outreach to under-served diverse populations, recruiting and supporting volunteers, and building youth/adult partnerships for community action. He shared his leadership skills at the local, state, and national levels.

Civic contributions have been a way of life for Jim. He is currently active in his church, is chair of the Wisconsin Interfaith Needs Response, Inc. Board of Directors, is an Oshkosh Choralier, and active with the Salvation Army. Past contributions include Winnebago County Literacy Council Tutor and board of the Oshkosh Area Food Pantry.
