The Power of Youth Associations in Vulnerable Communities

Steven Eric Krauss, Shepherd Zeldin and their associates have been studying the Gaya Island Youth Association, off the coast of Borneo in Malaysia. This youth association has intentionally broadened its impact over the years. It started as a youth sports-oriented organization and then started working with schools of educational issues. Most recently, the Youth Association has taken an organizing focus – it brought fresh water and electricity to the economically poor island. A detailed book chapter of the study is called “The Gaya Island Youth Association.” A briefer article is called Traditional youth associations as agents of social change: A case study of youth and adult partnership in a Malaysian fishing village.
