Civic Opportunity Dataset

Civic Opportunity Dataset

Leveraging IRS data and information scraped from organization websites, this resource from Johns Hopkins University illustrates the landscape of civic opportunity by county. The underlying data is aggregated by organization type into 15 categories with the primary organization type shown on an interactive map or table. An opportunity index on a 1-5 scale shows each county’s rank and percentile.

User expertise rating:

Sample questions:
Which counties fall into the lowest civic opportunity quintile, which specific subtype—membership, volunteer, events, or take action—shows the lowest raw count, and can Extension programming be developed to fill that specific gap? For a given county, what percentage of civic opportunity organizations are classified as youth compared to the state average, and does this county’s national rank in this category suggest we are a regional leader or in need of expanded youth civic infrastructure?
