Wisconsin’s Oil Trains
A new trend is on the rise where Bakken crude oil is shipped via rail car throughout the country. Concerns about these “bomb trains” are rising as well, especially after a string of train accidents occurred in ND, VA, AL, OK, and Quebec. These accidents created significant environmental damage and in some cases have taken human lives. Here is an article from the Huffington Post remembering the fiery crude oil crash in Lac-Megantic where 47 people were killed. The reason that this practice is alarming is because the rail line infrastructure and the rail cars being used are not designed for this kind of petroleum product. Bakken crude oil is extremely flammable and because these railroads are old and many are in disrepair, derailment is a high risk. The railroads run all over the country including many pristine, natural areas and also rural areas where the fire departments and emergency response personnel are likely not equipped to deal with an explosion of this proportion. Bakken “bomb trains” run through southeast Wisconsin and downtown Milwaukee, too, including adjacent to and across all 3 of our rivers. Here is an article from the Wisconsin State Journal about some of the safety and environmental concerns.

Green Challenge!
How green is your yard?  With the large amounts of rain we have received this spring and summer, we challenge you to find more ways to help reduce stormwater runoff.  Root-Pike Watershed Initiative Network has a list of ways to “green your yard” and lessen your property’s impact on our stormwater systems. Each of us contributes to pollution in our stormwater and each of us can help control it. The amount of stormwater that you stop from going into the collection system may seem small, but together it all adds up to cleaner water for everyone to enjoy. Here is a link to a list of some ways you can help!
Milwaukee County Parks Public Input Session
Join Park Director, John Dargle, Jr. to learn about current and future park happenings and share your comments thoughts and ideas! Be sure to mention your love of the rivers and tell the County that the rivers need better protection, including riverbank stabilization and buffers, comprehensive land management and reduced use of pesticides and chemicals at golf courses. Other concerns include a need for improved river access for non-motorized boats and removal of Estabrook Dam to benefit fish and paddlers!  If you are unable to attend, comment cards and all presentation materials will be available online at countyparks.com.
