In 2009, consumers purchased $143 billion in retail goods online from U.S. businesses. That compares to $27 billion in online retail in 2000. Online retail sales include purchases from online only retailers like Amazon and traditional retail companies like Barnes and Nobel and Best Buy that also sell online.
According to the U.S. Census, retail e-commerce totaled 3.9 percent ($142.9 billion) in 2009. That compares to total retail sales of almost $3.7 trillion. In 2000, online retail accounted for less than 1 percent of total retail sales.
