US DOT Fatality and Injury Reporting System Tool and WI DOT Community Maps
The U.S. DOT’s Fatality and Injury Reporting System Tool (FIRST) allows users to query both the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) and the Crash Report Sampling System (CRSS) using various attributes of crashes on the state’s roadways. Results can be disaggregated by the characteristics of the people involved or the crash itself.
The WI DOT offers a version of this data called Community Maps that is filtered to Wisconsin, searchable, generates county dashboards, and is generally user friendly.
User expertise rating:
Beginner to Intermediate. This database contains detailed information very specific to vehicle and pedestrian crashes. The WI DOT version is user friendly.
Sample questions:
How many pedestrians were killed or injured in a given county last year? How many crashes in a given county involved a driver age 15 to 20? In what areas of Wisconsin would children walking to school be at the most risk of being involved in a crash?
