Does the Persian Gulf Supply the Bulk of U.S Oil?

The six OPEC countries in the Persian Gulf (Saudi Arabic, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, and United Arab Emirates) supplied 18.4 percent of all U.S. crude oil imports in 2009.  But who supplied the bulk of the crude oil?

The U.S. Energy Information Administration reports that each of the following regions supplied more crude oil than the Persian Gulf OPEC members:

  • Canada (21.5%)
  • South America (19.5%)
  • Africa (21.1%)

Over half (55%) of all U.S. imported crude oil in 2009 originated in North America, South America, or Central America.

The data for this week’s snapshot came from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). The EIAcollects, analyzes, and disseminates independent and impartial energy information to promote sound policymaking, efficient markets, and public understanding of energy and its interaction with the economy and the environment.  To gather more information, go to their website at: http://www.eia.doe.gov/dnav/pet/pet_move_impcus_a2_nus_epc0_im0_mbblpd_a.htm
