Mission
Since 2016, Upham Woods has spearheaded Milwaukee Green STEM, which brings together environmentally conscious organizations to support student led inquiry projects, field experiences, and observation skills for urban youth. These objectives empowers youth to collect data, apply them to local issues, and communicate their findings. Students use the Digital Observation Technology Skills (DOTS) approach, which promotes the scientific process through field-based technology in local ecosystems. Mentors then support student research in classrooms. Participants share their projects at community events like Science Strikes Back, a community science fair.
But what do we do? Milwaukee Green STEM meets with students through the Research Accelerators to promote student inquiry and individual original research projects. We train teachers in the DOTS approach so that field experiences and technology use can happen after we visit the classroom. Students showcase their research at Science Strikes Back and continue on to other youth science events like the UW-SP Youth Summit and the Green Schools Conference. It would be a shame for programming to end with the school year, so Upham Woods hosts the Water Stories Summit each summer for our Milwaukee Green STEM participants to come to the Dells to canoe, test water quality, and share their knowledge. The Milwaukee Green STEM community welcomes learners of all ages and organizations that promote STEM education rooted in environmental experiences. Join us at any of our events!
