Turf and Fields Manager

What is the most rewarding part of this job?  The best part about this job is seeing the grass turn out like you want it at the end of the growing season. The techniques for growing turf grass are very complicated so it is always rewarding to have nice looking and healthy grass that allows players of any sport to perform their best.

Background Information:  Turf and Fields Managers can work for sports teams to maintain the fields while others manage the fields at golf courses and resorts. They are in charge of everything that grows in and around the facility where they are employed. This includes main playing fields, practice fields, decorative plants and flowers, and any surrounding grass. Along with growing the grass to its best quality, they are also responsible for seeding, maintaining, and painting lines if they are required.

Experience/Education Needed:  For a career like this, you can get a degree in turf grass management or there are also shorter online programs available. Experience in the field through internships and jobs is the most beneficial in helping you along your career path.

Average Salary Range:  Depending on what level of sports turf you manage or where you are located relevant to the climate, the salary could range from $65,000 to $130,000

Graduate high school, go to college, and major in turf grass management. Gain experience in the field through internships and jobs working with a variety of different turf styles and climates. Become a member of the Sports Turf Managers Association (STMA) and use that membership for networking. There are a limited number of opportunities for a career like this, especially at the professional sports level, so be sure to work hard and make a good impression.
