Voting

With limited exceptions, the plan commission must vote in open session. In the absence of specific guidance provided in state statutes, local ordinances or rules of procedure, routine and non-controversial items may be approved by unanimous consent (i.e. “Is there any objection to approving the minutes as distributed? Hearing none, the minutes are approved.”) A voice vote or roll call vote is recommended for taking action on resolutions, applications and petitions (i.e. “Those in favor say aye. Those opposed say nay.”) Generally, a simple majority of quorum is sufficient for the plan commission to decide an issue. However, some local ordinances require a supermajority or majority of the full plan commission to vote in favor of a specified measure.
