Positive Youth Development (PYD) is at the heart of 4-H. The 4-H program creates positive and safe learning environments that empower youth to develop skills, confidence, and respect. It is through the mentoring of caring adults that youth grow into tomorrow’s leaders.
“Through 4‑H civic engagement programs, youth learn about civic affairs, build decision-making skills and develop a sense of understanding and confidence in relating and connecting to other people.” –4.h.org. Youth Leadership resources foster youth leadership, inspire civic engagement, and develop youth voice.
An active, engaged 4-H club, whether community-based or custom, is intentional. Through the guidance of caring adults, 4-H clubs and their members flourish. Resources covering club management, member retention, and nurturing a safe learning environment are valuable tools for the seasoned and new club volunteer.
Learning life skills is a crucial piece of the Positive Youth Development puzzle involving the head, heart, hands, and health. Like every skill, life skills must be mastered through the experiential model of try, make mistakes, and try again.
