What is 4-H High School Outpost Camp?

4-H High School Outpost Camp takes place at Perrot State Park, northwest of La Crosse, nestled among 500-foot bluffs where the Trempealeau and Mississippi rivers meet. This camp is led and supervised by 4-H adult chaperones from Green and Rock Counties. This four day educational program is for 4-H youth in grades 9-12. Campers will sleep in tents and cook their food outdoors over an open flame.  They will enjoy time exploring the trails and river front of the state park.

This program provides a great opportunity to develop leadership and cooperation skills, build responsibility and  independence, and learn about our natural world in a safe environment.  This camp is sure to excite and engage any  youth who comes ready to make new friends and actively participate with others in exploring the great outdoors.

4-H Camp Activities

At Outpost Camp, you will enjoy a variety of fun camp activities planned by camp adult staff.

Hiking: During the camp, you will enjoy hiking trails with adult supervision. Trails may vary in difficulty. Steep climbs or descents and stairways may be encountered. Some trails will include steps, steep grades and rocky surfaces.

Teamwork: You will get to challenge your ability to work well in teams throughout camp, setting up and taking down camp sites, building/tending to the fire, prepping and cooking group dinner over the campfire, or playing group games.

Canoeing & Swimming: The group will be renting canoes at the park to explore the Trempealeau Bay on the 3.4-mile looped canoe trail. There may also be opportunities for swimming during camp.  A certified lifeguard will be present during all waterfront activities.

Day-Trip: On one day we plan to travel about 1 hour to the International Owl Center in Houston, MN (to learn about and see a few live owls), have a picnic lunch, and hike at Sugar Loaf Bluff near Winona, MN on our return to camp.

Transportation

Adult volunteers who have been approved as authorized drivers by the University will provide carpooling from Janesville to camp and back. The group will leave about 8:00am Thursday, June 25th, and return late-afternoon, Sunday, June 28th. More information on the timeline will be mailed prior to camp.

Camp Staff

An adult volunteer trained in first aid and CPR and a certified lifeguard will be on staff and will handle health and safety needs and administer medications for youth under the age of 18. Tri State Ambulance Service are ready to handle any emergencies.  All campers are provided accident insurance. The camp staff will consist of 3 adult volunteers, who together will serve as chaperones, role models, and activity directors for camp.  All of the adult volunteers are enrolled 4-H leaders and have completed the youth protection process. Our ratio of campers to staff is no more than 6 to 1.
