State Livestock Quiz Bowl and Skillathon Contest: UW-Madison Campus – All day
Opportunity for Juniors, Seniors and Mixed Teams to take care of 2 state contests in one day!
Below are links to the resource guides that help prepare for the contests.
What are these events?
Livestock Quiz Bowl is a quiz competition where all the questions are about beef, sheep, swine, and meat goat topics and members use a buzzer in order to answer the questions. Teams compete in a double elimination format by giving oral answers to questions posed by a moderator. Each match has both an individual and toss-up question round. The winning 4-H senior team will represent Wisconsin at the National 4-H Livestock Quiz Bowl competition held each fall in Louisville, Kentucky at the North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE). (Resource Link)
Skillathon contest is made up of a written quiz and learning stations such as breed identification, feed identification, equipment identification as well as some team activities such as demonstrating evaluation skills. The top Senior level 4-H team will represent Wisconsin at the National 4-H Skillathon Contest, held each fall in Louisville, Kentucky at the North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE). Competition in Quiz Bowl & Skillathon encourages members to develop a more complete knowledge of animals and related subjects. These contests provide educational programs for all project members, including those who may not own a project animal, and provide a way to develop self-confidence. These programs are a great parallel to some similar programs that breed associations and other organizations conduct.
Please let Scott Fleming know if you plan to attend by March 8th so teams can be finalized. A great opportunity to learn more about your livestock projects and compete in 2 state contests.Top Senior Teams earn the opportunity to move on to the National events held in November 2023 at NAILE, Louisville, KY.
If you plan to participate – contact Scott Fleming – call/text 262-949-9114 or email email@example.com no later than March 8. Look for more information about a workshop/zoom meeting on how to prepare.
Area Animal Science Days – Livestock Judging: District contest: TBD, State Contest, July 2023, TBD:
Starting in April, we will start livestock practices. This will be where 4-H Youth (juniors and seniors) will judge classes of beef, swine, sheep, and meat goats. Be on the lookout for a practice schedule. If there are families that would like to host livestock workouts, please let Alissa Grenawalt know. We are in need of Beef (Market Steers, Heifers), Swine (Market/Breeding classes), Sheep (Market lambs, Breeding lambs), Meat Goats (Market/Breeding). Youth place classes as well as have to answer questions on certain classes. Seniors also give oral reasons and there is a grading component for beef and percent muscle exercise for the market swine class.
Any other questions, feel free to contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org or call/text (608) 921-1847.
