Base Camp Packing List

There’s one rule to successful camping and that’s BE PREPARED! To make your visit more enjoyable we have compiled a list of things to bring so you feel prepared for anything. Parents for generations have learned one thing that can help keep the lost and found items to a minimum: PUT YOUR NAME ON EVERYTHING! Upham Woods is not responsible for any property brought to camp that is lost or damaged during your stay.


  • Rain gear
  • Sturdy tennis shoes or hiking boots
  • Hat or cap
  • Extra pair of shoes
  • Warm jacket
  • Changes of outer clothing including long pants and long sleeves
  • Changes of inner clothing
  • Several pairs of socks
  • Sandals for the beach (summer only)

For winter add:

  • Warm head wear
  • Two pairs of mittens or gloves
  • Winter coat
  • Snow pants or Snowmobile suit
  • Long underwear
  • Boots

Personal gear:

  • Sleeping bag and pillow
  • Towel, toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Shampoo, conditioner, and soap
  • Medications in original container with patient’s name (if prescription) labeled, and given to first aid person
  • Refillable water bottle (old plastic soda bottles with your name on it works great)
  • Sun block
  • Insect repellent
  • Flashlight
  • Camera (inexpensive and labeled) and film
  • Swimsuit and beach towel (summer only)
  • Journal or diary
  • Book to read
  • Pen and paper/ stamped addressed envelopes or post cards to write home
  • Fan + extension cord (optional but helpful in summer)

Optional group equipment:

  • 1st aid kits for all leaders
  • Movies, videos, board games in case of bad weather
  • Costumes/props for campfire skits

Do not bring to camp:

  • Alcohol or drugs
  • Firearms or explosives
  • Candy, chewing gum or other snacks
  • Non-recyclable containers
  • Electronic Games
  • Money – unless needed for off-site activities

Upham Woods does not sell souvenirs, commercial snacks, soda, stamps or film so please plan accordingly. Please do not let youth store personal money in the cabins, as it has a way of getting lost or stolen. We thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

(Camping tip – Enclose everything in plastic/garbage bags with name labels)

  • 2 pairs of shorts/ 2 T-shirts  (made of quick drying material)
  • 1 pair of pants  (preferably not denim as it takes long to dry)
  • Rain gear
  • 1 sweater or 1 sweatshirt   (One or the other, please. Both take up too much room)
  • 1 pair of sturdy hiking boots
  • 1 pair of tennis shoes or sandals which can get wet/ or dry quickly
  • 2 pairs of socks/ underwear
  • Sleep wear
  • Sunglasses
  • Swimsuit
  • Towel, small (synthetic is best)
  • Hat or Bandanna
  • Toiletries – soap/shampoo (biodegradable, if possible), toothpaste, toothbrush

Necessary Equipment:

  • Sleeping bag
  • Water bottles!! (at least two)
  • Bug spray
  • Sunscreen/ lip balm
  • Flash light

Optional Equipment:

  • Camera (waterproof, disposable, inexpensive)
  • Personal camp cook gear or other equipment (if desired)
  • Binoculars
  • Journal or diary

Please Leave at Home:

  • Pillows (They take up room in canoes)
  • Candy, gum, sodas, snacks (They attract rodents and bugs. Can also lead to litter in tents & campsites)
  • Cell phones, radios, music/video players, video games, etc. (They disturb the natural beauty for some and can be a very expensive loss in a tipped canoe)
  • Valuables, jewelry, expensive cameras, etc. (Murphy’s Law of Camping applies here)
  • Extra money

Please note, we try to pack light because we have to carry everything we bring for Outpost camp.  Your comfort and safety on this trip depend greatly on the clothing and equipment.  Pillows, too many clothes and electronic items should be left at base camp.  For river canoe Outposts be prepared to repack your gear into waterproof canoe packs before your group departs base camp.
